When I was still in secondary school, my brother and I used to frequent Serene Centre to buy their comics and weird magazines once in a while. It was there that I bought my first roleplaying game, and it was also there that I was introduced to the world of miniatures wargaming. During those days, we didn’t have much money, so the only thing that we could afford during that time was a warhammer paint set, which included 5 bottles of paint, and 5 models on which you could try painting. Those models were from the Lizardmen army, and those were the very first models which I ever painted.
Fast forward more than 10 years, and here I am, quite a gamer of sorts. I’m playing a wonderful miniatures game called Hordes with the girlfriend, and we both have great armies waiting to be painted and brought to the battlefield. Recently, I was made aware that there was a new Lizardmen army being released for the Warhammer game, and I was naturally intrigued. After looking at the models, something makes me want to get some models and paint up an army, even though I might never even field them in battle.

Something about Lizardmen as a race intrigues me. Could it be the link to the Great Old Ones in Lovecraftian lore? Or perhaps I like the idea of ancient Mayan-like reptilian creatures defending their last homeland from the marauding hordes of humans who want to grab their gold aka El Dorado style? Or perhaps it’s a part of me missing the time where we were young and still full of wonder, where we were allowed to indulge in dreams and fantasies and actually keep them.
In any case, I don’t think I’ll ever get down to actually purchasing and painting an army (I still have my Hordes stuff to paint), but the whole point of this was an exercise in reminising about how I came to be a gamer.
