Slackness abounds and other stuff

Now that the deadlines are up, I’ve been a lot less stressed, and getting a bit more sleep than usual. That’s a good thing, considering that the sleep that I get isn’t somehow plagued with weird nightmares.

Been able to catch up on some of the geeky stuff as well – Headed to Serene Centre with Stella to get some graphic novels. Checked out some of the Warhammer 40k stuff as well. Damn, their stuff are way overpriced. The night was spent watching most of Season 9 CSI while the gf was out with her friends. Been a while since I’ve sat down and just watched a whole season of anything so it was a welcome change of pace for once.

Today, it’s back to the books. And my light died at the most appropriate time. Hooray.

Warhammer – Lizardmen

When I was still in secondary school, my brother and I used to frequent Serene Centre to buy their comics and weird magazines once in a while. It was there that I bought my first roleplaying game, and it was also there that I was introduced to the world of miniatures wargaming. During those days, we didn’t have much money, so the only thing that we could afford during that time was a warhammer paint set, which included 5 bottles of paint, and 5 models on which you could try painting. Those models were from the Lizardmen army, and those were the very first models which I ever painted.

Fast forward more than 10 years, and here I am, quite a gamer of sorts. I’m playing a wonderful miniatures game called Hordes with the girlfriend, and we both have great armies waiting to be painted and brought to the battlefield. Recently, I was made aware that there was a new Lizardmen army being released for the Warhammer game, and I was naturally intrigued. After looking at the models, something makes me want to get some models and paint up an army, even though I might never even field them in battle.

Something about Lizardmen as a race intrigues me. Could it be the link to the Great Old Ones in Lovecraftian lore? Or perhaps I like the idea of ancient Mayan-like reptilian creatures defending their last homeland from the marauding hordes of humans who want to grab their gold aka El Dorado style? Or perhaps it’s a part of me missing the time where we were young and still full of wonder, where we were allowed to indulge in dreams and fantasies and actually keep them.

In any case, I don’t think I’ll ever get down to actually purchasing and painting an army (I still have my Hordes stuff to paint), but the whole point of this was an exercise in reminising about how I came to be a gamer.

Spider Jeruselem – on aggressive journalism

It is, ultimately, about giving a shit. It’s about giving something back to these bastards, these people whom we somehow let run our goddamn lives for us. Giving them a taste of what it means to be us.

Every law that curbs my basic freedoms; every lie about the things I care for; every crime committed against me by their politics- that’s what makes me get up and hound these fuckers, and i’ll do that until my brain dries up or something.

That’s what we achieve. We show them that they’re accountable. We show them that just as they try to heard us back into cages of quiet mediocrity, we can chase them back to the fucking hell with the truth. It’s the journalism of attachment. It’s caring about the world you report on.

Some people say that’s bad journalism, that there should be a detached, cold, unbiased view of the world in our news media. And if that is what you want, there are security cameras everywhere that you can watch tapes of.

That’s why I love Transmetropolitan. Social commentaries rock.

musings from superhero comics

When it comes down to the day where the heroes in our lives are unable to save us from certain danger, and unlikely individuals whom we have never respected, perhaps even despised- step forward with an alternative solution to our troubles, would we welcome them with open arms?
